The Garden of Hikmah, a terraced permaculture garden on a south-facing slope of the Berkeley hills, featuring cascading terraced beds designed for water harvesting and soil enrichment. At the top, a modest mob brick dwelling inspired by the 7th-century house of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Medina, built from sun-dried earth bricks with thick walls, a small interior courtyard open to the sky, a shaded veranda, and a flat roof designed for rainwater catchment with clay downspouts directing water to underground cisterns and gravity-fed basins. Lush plants and natural landscaping surround the structure.
