After the initiator tRNA has been positioned in the P site during initiation, the ribosome moves into the elongation phase where peptide bond formation and translocation occur. Guided by the EF-Tu - GTP complex; a new charged tRNA carrying an amino acid enters the A site of the ribosome. The anticodon on the tRNA molecule base-pairs with the complementary codon on an mRNA molecule to ensure the correct amino acid is added to the growing polypeptide chain. Once the match is correct, GTP hydrolysis triggers a conformational change that leads to the release of the tRNA from the elongation factor and its accommodation into the ribosomeâs A site.
